Rise of the Runelords: Burnt Offerings, Part 11

The Catacombs

It has been said that it all began with a simple band of heroes. Heroes who chose to side with an orcish warrior, instead of a thief.

A thief who called himself ‘king’.

Once upon a time, beneath the ancient city of Aquitaine on the northern shores of Sog’s Lake …

… the heroes followed the old smuggler tunnels and uncovered an ancient complex guarded by vargoulle, and pairs of magespawn guards. The stones in the complex are old, much older than any of the brick of Aquitaine above. Carvings and a statue date the location to the bygone days of the Thassalonian Empire and its Runelord masters.

These chambers seemed dedicated to the Runelord Alaznist. But what does Alaznist or the seven tyrannical Runelords have with Nualia’s plans? And who is this mysterious “Lamashtu” that Tsuto spoke of?

Above, another of the obsidian robed ‘attendants’ to Nualia leaves the rocky crags of the Devil’s Platter and begins his travel through the Mosswood towards Aquitaine.

Heroes learn that Vargoulle parts can be used to make a stew that can cure the touch of a wight. It can also make a poison. It also makes a toxin that can compel a young lady with creamy green jade eyes to perform one task.

The heroes felt this was not something they wanted to make.

Using a foot of licorice, the monk manages to incapacitate the demonic vargouille by tossing the licorice in the demon’s mouth before it can shriek. It chews and can’t get the candy out of its mouth before the heroes attack it.
